Chief William Parenti announced that Police officers from North Plainfield will be cracking down on pedestrian safety related laws as part of the 2011 – 2012 Pedestrian Safety Education and Enforcement Program. Beginning October 1 and running through June 30, 2012, the North Plainfield Police Department will have officers targeting pedestrian related violations both in the business district and surrounding the schools.

The North Plainfield Police Department Traffic Safety Division has distributed pedestrian safety fliers containing the pedestrian related laws and safe practices to every student in the district through the school system.  The Traffic Safety Division in will work with the Police Department’s community policing officers and meet with civic and religious groups in an effort to educate the public on safe pedestrian practices.

Our statistics have shown that certain areas of town are more dangerous to pedestrians and therefore we will focus our efforts on those areas.  We will do so by utilizing grant funding to provide roving patrols focused on pedestrian related violations as well as multi-officer decoy details which will be operated on Somerset Street.

Our goal is to lower pedestrian related accidents by at least 10 percent this year through continued education and enforcement.
