July 12, 2012

North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti is pleased to announce that the department’s ninth annual National Night Out celebration and Public Safety Vehicle Expo will be held on Tuesday, August 7.  The year’s event will take place from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the municipal parking lot across from the Municipal Building at 263 Somerset Street, North Plainfield

Plans include a display of public safety emergency equipment from the North Plainfield Police Department, and the North Plainfield Fire Department. There will also be equipment on display from elements of the Somerset County Emergency Response Team.  Handouts and pamphlets will also be available on such timely topics as domestic violence; gang awareness; identity theft; block watch associations; and crime prevention.

Again year, we have an added bonus for borough residents, a document shredding vehicle will be on site, courtesy of Safeguard Document Shredding of Manalapan, New Jersey.  Borough residents will be permitted to bring at no cost two shopping bags of private paper they would like shredded to safeguard against identity theft.

All borough residents are invited to attend, and meet with the department’s personnel.  The North Plainfield PBA will be hosting a barbeque with free hot dogs, hamburgers, Italian ices and sodas for all in attendance.  There will also be party favors for the community’s children.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches.  The event is expected to attract more than 30 million people nationwide.  The idea of the program has evolved into fostering a partnership between local law enforcement and the community residents.  By working in concert, crime can be reduced and the quality of life that a community enjoys improved.  Chief Parenti said:  “National Night Out is an educational way to bring together the police department, our public safety partners, and the residents of the community we serve in a relaxed, informative and fun manner.”

Chief Parenti also reminds all residents that STEP, (Summer Teen Evening Program), will continue at the North Plainfield Middle School, (34 Wilson Avenue), on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. through July until the season’s end barbeque picnic at Green Acres Park on Thursday, August 16.  The program allows borough youth to participate in pickup basketball games or relax with friends for conversation.  Refreshments are provided and representatives from the Board of Education and Police Department are always on hand.
