Effective June 2013, the Somerset County Recycling Division will begin picking up recyclable items from county businesses wishing to use county recycling services. \

“Somerset County is offering this new service to the many businesses that want to comply with the law to recycle but have been unable to develop a program,” said Freeholder Robert Zaborowski, county recycling division liaison.

 “Recycling is the responsible thing to do, is a way to practice good corporate citizenship and is good for business,” he said. “Through recycling, disposal costs can be avoided, jobs are created and natural resources and energy are saved.” 

Somerset County businesses that would like to have recyclables picked up by the county should contact the Somerset County Recycling Center at 732-469-3363 or recycling@co.somerset.nj.us for details. 

Businesses participating in the program will be able to recycle newspapers, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, glass containers, aluminum containers, steel and tin cans, plastic bottles and containers (#1 - #7), pizza boxes, envelopes, writing and copy paper, phone books, catalogs, clear plastic clamshell containers and more.

The Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act of 1987 requires that New Jersey residential, commercial and institutional sectors separate recyclable material from regular trash.

“The law has had a significant effect on reducing the volume of waste going to landfills but for it to be successful it is essential that every resident and business participate,” said Freeholder Zaborowski.

Somerset County businesses are urged to take this opportunity to work cooperatively with county and local officials in reaching compliance with all recycling requirements.  Not only is such an approach critical to Somerset County reaching its state-mandated recycling goal of 50 percent, but it fosters good relationships among local officials, the business sector, employees and the public.
