The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services announce the June program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Experience Handel’s Messiah in a whole new way with this enlightening, entertaining lecture and performance with a focus on the “Hallelujah” chorus. Maestro Maull recently performed this same program at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. You don’t want to miss this event!) Make mealtime fun and pleasant with some of these new ideas!) June 11 – “The Importance of Exercise as we Age” by Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:30 am (This informative program will focus on the many reasons why a physically active lifestyle is the key to healthy and enjoyable “golden years.”) June 12 – “Protecting Your Money from Scams and Investment Fraud” by the New Jersey State Bureau of Securities, 10:30 a.m. Become an informed consumer. This valuable and informative session will review how you can avoid becoming a victim of senior exploitation and elder investment fraud. June 12 – State Health Insurance Program (SHIP), 10:00 am. A counselor will be available to provide free help to New Jersey beneficiaries, who have problems with, or questions about their health insurance. June 13 – “Living Well Yoga Demonstration” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Johanna Mahal, Certified Yoga Fitness Instructor, 12:00-1:30 p.m. (Johanna Mahal will demonstrate chair yoga and will discuss the myriad of benefits including increased flexibility, improved balance, and better sense of well-being. Participants are encouraged to bring light weights and a yoga strap, which helps beginners hold yoga poses longer and in better form. Individuals are asked to wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement and flat, closed toed shoes for balance. Reservation deadline is June 11.) June 14 – Japanese Taiko Drum Performance by Kenny Chin, 10:30 a.m. (Join us today for this energizing performance by Kenny Chin. Chin, 62, took up Japanese-style drumming called Taiko at the age of 35 and has been performing and perfecting the art ever since.) June 18 – Free Hearing Screenings and Hearing Health Presentation by Total Hearing, 10:30 a.m. June 19 – “Sense Your Stability with Balance Screenings” by Dr. Jeffrey Sommer, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, Elite Advantage Physical Therapy, 10:30 a.m. (This program will address intrinsic and environmental safety issues that can increase fall risk. Individuals can avoid trips and fall incidents by practicing safe and simple balance training exercises to improve static and dynamic stability. After this program, attendees will be able to recognize intrinsic fall risks based on their age, vision and/or medical complications, which will help them reduce their likelihood of falling, while improving their balance and mobility. Balance screenings will be conducted through a series of tests in interactive group settings during the program.) June 19 – “Tax Presentation” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity by Kevin Lynch, President, Somerset County Chapter, Society for Financial Awareness, 12:00-1:30 p.m. Reservation deadline is June 17th. Program fee is $5.00 per person. Kevin Lynch will present valuable tax information and answer your questions about the Fiscal Cliff, “Sequestration” and its impact on federal estate and income taxes as well as how other tax rates are affected. This is essential information everyone must know. June 21 – The Total Brain Workout: Logical Thinking, 10:30 a.m. (This is the third session in our new series of interactive brain exercises. Developing the ability to think logically is a prerequisite for solving puzzles in mathematics, in science or even in life. We will test your logical thinking with fun and interactive puzzles and games.) June 25 – “Stress Management” by Michele TenEyck, Somerset Treatment Services, 10:30 a.m. (Michele TenEyck will present various methods to reduce all levels of stress in your life and will discuss how to identify the sources of stress in order to manage them properly.) June 10 – “Camille Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3” by George Marriner Maull, Artistic Director of the Discovery Orchestra, 10:30 am (Maestro Maull will walk us through the musical blueprint of Camille Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3, also known as Organ Symphony, even though it is not a true symphony for an organ by simply an orchestral symphony. The composer wrote the work almost as a type of “history” of his own career: virtuoso passages and brilliant orchestral writing characteristics of the Romantic Period.) June 12 – Free Blood Pressure Screenings by Susan Anastario, RN, Community Visiting Nurse Association, 10:30 am June 14 – “From Here to Eternity” – Movie Discussion and Trivia by Catherine DeBerry, Librarian, Adult Services, Somerset County Library System, Warren Branch, at 10:15 am. (From Here to Eternity is a 1953 drama film, directed by Fred Zinneman, that is based on the novel of the same name by James Jones. The picture deals with the tribulations of three soldiers, played by Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra, stationed on Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed portray the women in their lives and the supporting cast includes Ernest Borgnine and George Reeves. The film won eight Academy Awards out of 13 nominations, including for picture, best director (Fred Zinneman), adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Frank Sinatra) and supporting actress (Donna Reed). After viewing the movie, we will have a discussion and share movie trivia. The transportation van will depart the center at 12:45 for the return trip home.)
