BERNARDS – The public is invited to a program followed by a panel discussion on “Cancer: The New Chronic Disease” with a focus on blood, ovarian and lung cancers. The program will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Bernards Township Municipal Building located at 1 Collyer Lane . A light dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m.

The expert panel of physicians includes Roger K. Strair, MD, PhD, Chief of Hematologic Malignancies/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey; Mario M. Leitaeo, Jr., MD, FACOG, Co-Director of the Robotic Surgery Program and Associate Attending Surgeon, Gynecology Service, Department of Surgery for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; and Mark D. Widmann, MD, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Director, Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Program for the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, Atlantic Health System.

This program was designed to specifically address blood, ovarian and lung cancer risk factors, cancer screenings, types of cancers that present as chronic disease, innovative treatment therapies, disease management and survivorship concerns for those affected by cancer, including caregivers, family members and those who want to learn more about these issues. Continuing education (CE) credits have been approved for nurses, social workers and health educators (CHES).

This unique program is a collaborative effort sponsored by the Morris and Somerset Regional Chronic Disease Coalition (RCDC) and its members, including the Bernards Township Health Department, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
