Somerset County Sheriff's Office Holiday Traffic Safety Initiative |
SOMERVILLE – The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Somerset County Traffic Safety Alliance and the Somerset County Chiefs of Police Association, participated in a holiday traffic-safety initiative resulting in more than 50 motor-vehicle stops. From Dec. 1, 2013, through Jan. 1, 2014, the Sheriff’s Office conducted multiple high-visibility saturation patrols throughout Somerset County. As a result of these enforcement efforts, the Sheriff’s Office stopped 53 vehicles, resulting in the arrests of three individuals for driving under the influence, one arrest for possession of marijuana, two arrests for active warrants, 18 summonses for use of a cellular phone while driving, two suspended-driver citations and 41 summonses issued for other motor-vehicle violations. The Sheriff’s Office also partnered with municipal police departments and conducted “Cops in Shops” details during Thanksgiving week, which focused on underage purchase of alcohol. “My office is committed to the safety of residents as well as those who work, travel through or shop in Somerset County on a daily basis,” Sheriff Provenzano said. “The success of these initiatives would not be possible without the support of the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, grant funding from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, EmPoWER Somerset and the dedicated men and women of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.” |
