Freeholder Robert Zaborowski, human services liaison, announced that county senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have released their latest program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

August 12Free Balance Screenings by Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:00-12:00 pm (Therapists from Kessler Rehabilitation Center will be on site to conduct individual balance screenings.  No appointment is necessary.)

August 13 – “Travel Back to the 1920’s” by Trish Chambers, Trish Chambers Productions, 10:30 a.m. (The “Roaring 20’s” return with a production featuring full costumes and music.  This presentation discusses the emergence of American women from the demure Gibson Girl to the flashing Flapper.  Also discussed are the impacts of World War I on society, the influences of literature, movies and art, plus a look at the fashion of that time period.  You don’t want to miss this program!)

August 15 – Lunch & a Movie: “The Great Gatsby,” 10:15-12:30 pm (As a follow up to our trip back to 1920’s, today we will watch the Great Gatsby, based on the 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The movie follows millionaire Jay Gatsby and a cast of characters living on Long Island in the summer of 1922.) 

August 19 – “Healthy Mexican Recipe Ideas” by Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 a.m. (Kaitlyn will discuss how simple it is to swap some ingredients to create a healthier taco and give suggestions on various healthy Mexican recipes.)

August 20 – Literary Quiz Part II, 10:30 a.m. (This is the second session of our American literary program to test your knowledge of the great classics.)

August 22 – “Unclaimed Funds” by Linda Henderson, New Jersey Unclaimed Property Office (Learn how to find out if there are an unclaimed funds with your name on them.)

August 25 – The Rubiani Brothers Dynamic Duo: A Musical Tribute to the Oldies & Goodies” (This is a “not to miss” show by Tino (age 14) and Jacob (age 13) who love to sing the good ‘ol songs.)

August 26 – “Safe Medication Disposal” by Officer Tom Wallace, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office (Bring your expired or unused medications to the center for safe disposal and learn about the hazards of previously used disposal methods.)

August 27 – “The Amazing Things You Can Make with Legos” by Phillip Tellep (Do you think Legos are just for kids? Not so!  Enjoy seeing unique designs made with Legos and then try your hand at making them!)

August 12 & 26 – Chair Tai Chi with Bobbi Joels, 10:30 a.m. (Tai chi is based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically together into one long, graceful gesture.  Studies have reported that some participants experience a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and gain a greater sense of well-being.  Regular tai chi can help reduce falls, especially for those with balance problems.)

August 1 – “Drumming Circle and its Health Benefits” by Sharon Silverstein, Living at Peace, 10:30 a.m. (A Drumming Circle feeds the mind, body and spirit.  It is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression.  Drumming has been known to induce deep relaxation, lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Sharon Silverstein facilitates drumming circles for health and wellness. She has been featured on local cable television, radio programs and in national magazines.  Participation in the inner drumming circle has an 18 person maximum.  Advanced registration is required for participation in the inner drumming circle.  Limited participation space is available outside the drumming circle.  Drums and other percussion instruments will be provided for 35 participants.)

August 4 – “Singing Workers: American Occupational Folksong” by Saul Broudy, Ph.D., Folklorist and Performer from the Horizons Speakers Bureau, 10:30 a.m. (Before modern mass-media and widespread literacy, workers in various occupations made their own songs to express emotions, convey information, tell stories, solidify group identity and help them make it through the day.  Saul Broudy will perform the songs of railroad workers, coal miners, farmers, hobos, truck drivers, pilots and other workers, and discuss the role this music played in the worker’ lives.  This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.)

August 5 – “Around the World with Wyndham” by Wyndham Worldwide Hotels, 10:30 a.m. (Get your passport (provided) and join members of Wyndham Worldwide Hotels as they take us around the world.  Among the “stops” we will be making will be London, St. Thomas, Aruba and Rome.  You will learn about different countries and receive an assortment of trinkets.)

August 6 – “Vitamins and Antioxidants” by Susan Canonico, RD, Summit Health Management, 10:15 a.m. (What are they?  Do we really need them, vs food?  What is the correct way to take them?  This program will define what vitamins and antioxidants are and will answer many questions surrounding the two.)

August 8 & 22 – Brains and Games with Lorenthia, 10:30 a.m.

August 11 – Hawaiian Statehood Day Celebration, 10:30 a.m. (Hawaii was the 50th state to be admitted to the Union and some historians say that it wasn’t until Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 that people on the U.S. mainland fully recognized the importance of Hawaii to the rest of the country.  Join us as we celebrate Hawaii with Yasmine, a professional Hula Dancer.  After the full costume performance, Yasmine will tell us the meaning of the hand movements and she will teach us how to do the Hula Dance.  “E Komo Mai” (welcome, come in.) and join us for a fun-filled program.)

August 25 – “FED-UP” Senior Consumer Fraud” by Andrew Tucker, Supervising Investigator, Division of Consumer Affairs, Office of Attorney General, 10:30 a.m. (Learn about FED-UP,(Senior Fraud Education and Protection Program) and how it can provide practical information for self-protection when doing business, avoiding scams, protecting your identity and credit, making investments, applying for mortgages and managing your health.)

August 25 – “Veteran Support Services” by Howard Bradford, Veterans Outreach Specialist, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley, 11:30 a.m. (This organization offers support to veterans and their families to overcome the barriers that stand between them and a stable, secure life.  Their goal is to make sure veterans connect to the benefits they are entitled to.  This program promotes the strong bonds forged between veterans by incorporating mentoring and peer-to-peer support.  This program is open to all veterans and their families, regardless of age.)

August 27 – “Understanding Memory Loss” Rose Berger, MSW, Coordinator, Education and Outreach, Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 10:15 a.m. (Memory loss that disrupts everyday life is not a normal part of aging.  This program explores the difference between normal age-related memory changes and abnormal changes that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia disorders, including the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.  The presentation will discuss the importance of receiving a thorough diagnostic evaluation when symptoms arise, current treatment options and research advances.)
