Government Energy Aggregation Program

GOVERNMENT ENERGY AGGREGATION PROGRAM

WORKING TO LOWER YOUR ENERGY BILL

The Borough of North Plainfield passed an ordinance, which became effective on October 12, 2014 to establish the North Plainfield Energy Community Choice Program. This program is a Government-Private energy aggregation program that will permit the municipality to aggregate residential and non-residential electric consumers in North Plainfield for the purpose of purchasing electricity at lower rates than currently available from the utility company (PSE&G).  By combining the electric requirements of the residential, industrial, commercial and public entity accounts, the program can purchase energy from Third Party Electricity Suppliers at prices lower than the average PSE&G price, with the possibility of added benefits such as higher renewable energy content. The program is only for the electric supply portion of your electric service.  The delivery portion will continue to be provided by PSE&G at their regulated rates and PSE&G will continue to provide emergency and safety services.  PSE&G will also continue to provide customer services such as metering, meter reading, billing and service restoration.

The program is being implemented this fall and it is expected that the public bidding process and transition to new supplier will be completed in early 2015. The supply contract term shall be for no more than two years and will only be awarded if there are savings for residents compared to the current PSE&G rates.  Savings of 5-15% are expected.  This equates to $45-$130 dollars per year for the average residential electric consumer.  Savings for business will vary based on the electric usage at each facility.

How do I participate?
These programs combine the municipal facilities with those of residential and non-residential customers.

Residents:

  • Residents are automatically included in the program and no action is required to participate.  However, at any time after the first 30 days of the program, a resident may chose to “opt-out” and return to the utility program with no penalty.
  • Residential customers that have already chosen a third party supplier will not be eligible to participate and will remain with their chosen supplier.

Commercial/Industrial Businesses/Non-Profit/Agencies (Non-residential):

  • The non-residential (business/institutional/commercial/industrial customers must choose to voluntarily participate (opt-in) in the program.
  • The opt-in form and utility release form required to enroll in the program are available by clicking on the links below or at the Clerk’s office at 263 Somerset Street North Plainfield NJ 07060.
