The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging &
Disability Services have announced the March program schedule.  All programs
begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations
by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact

Hunterdon Counties.) March 7 - "Emergency Preparedness" by Laurie Roome,
Eldercare Educator, Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services,
10:30 am (Our climate seems to be changing so today Laurie will be here to
talk about how we can be prepared for intense rain and snow storms, power
outages, floods and many other types of emergencies.  Better to be safe than
sorry!) March 11 - "Coffee From Around the World" by Laurie Loughney, 10:30
am (This coffee lover's workshop covers how different types of coffee have
played a role in the history of the world.  Learn interesting tidbits about
"cowboy coffee" including how to make it.) March 12 - Craft: Create Your Own
Saint Patrick's Day Greeting Card with Gerry, 10:30 am (Gerry, our crafty
volunteer will show you how easy it is to make a unique Saint Patrick's Day
greeting card using rubber stamps and a lot of imagination.) March 14 - "How
to Deal with Intergenerational Conflict" by Suda Narasimhan, LSW, Jewish
Family Services of Somerset County, Family Mentor Program, 10:30 am (Suda
will be here to help older adults understand and cope with relationship
changes that take place with adult children and grandchildren.) March 17 -
Saint Patrick's Day Party, 10:30 am (What would the holiday be without
wearing green and corned beef & cabbage on the menu?  Celebrate with friends
because today everyone is Irish!) March 19 - Free Hearing Screenings &
Hearing Aid Checks with Farah Said, AuD., Raritan Valley Audiology,
10:00-12:00 pm (Farah Said will be at the center to conduct hearing
screenings and inspect your hearing aid to be sure it is working at optimal
levels.  No appointment is necessary).
March 21 - Total Brain Workout: Reasoning, 10:30 am (The program is like
aerobics for your brain!  Reasoning involves the ability to analyze the best
way to do something such as arranging or organizing.  The puzzles in this
chapter require you to activate your reasoning skills in a focused manner to
maximize brain power.) March 21 - Tea Tasting (Did you know there are many
health benefits to drinking tea?  With so many varieties on the market, you
are bound to find one you really enjoy.  Tea sampling following the Total
Brain Workout program.) March 25 - "The 12 Steps to Happiness" by Betty
Epple, 10:30 am (Betty Epple is a club mentor in Toastmasters International
and a board member of the Bridgewater Women's Club.  Her presentation will
guide us towards the simple steps that anyone can do to create happiness
such as nurturing cherished friendships and expressing gratitude on a daily
basis).
March 26 - "Prostate and Ovarian Cancer Screenings with Somerset Medical
Center, 10:30 am (Raise your awareness with this important program about
prostate and ovarian cancer.  Somerset Medical Center will administer pen
and paper screenings to determine your risk factors.) March 26 - Bingo (Try
your luck today for some great prizes!) March 26 - "The Wide World of
Healthy Snacking" by Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 am (Kaitlyn McGowan will
tempt your taste buds with the healthiest snacks out there today.  She will
speak about the nutrients and antioxidants that are plentiful in healthy
snacks and will offer samples including kale chips and fruit salad.) March

March 3 - Mind Your Mind Memory Fun, 10:30 am (Memory loss is a concern as
we age.  Together we will work through several activities and games that
when practiced on a regular basis will help with the retrieval process.)
March 3 - Marshmallow Challenge (Using sticks of spaghetti, tape, string and
one marshmallow, attendees will use their creativity and problem-solving
skills as they work together to try and create the tallest freestanding
tower.) March 4 - "Maple Sugaring" by Vanessa Darras, Naturalist, Somerset
County Park Commission, Environmental Education Center (Attendees will learn
about both the history of maple sugar from the time of the Native Americans
and techniques used to make this tasty treat.  Mini pancakes will be
provided for a maple syrup tasting.) March 7, 14, 21 & 28 - Brains and Games
with Adrienne/Hand Bell Practice, 10:30 am March 10 - "Keeping Your Mind
Sharp" by Caitlin Witucki, MS, Health Promotion Specialist, county Office on
Aging and Disability Services, 10:30 am (An educational workshop that will
empower attendees to lead healthier lifestyles.  Specific actions will be
suggested to improve one's current health and to keep one's mind sharp.)
March 11 - Sci-Tech 101: Soft Shell Eggs and Rubber Chicken Bones, 11:15 am
(Eggs and chicken bones contain calcium carbonate.  See what happens when
acetic acid is added to them.) March 17 - Minute It to Win It Games: Ireland
vs. United States, 10:30 am (Based on the games used on the popular TV show,
we will have some client-friendly competitions with deceptively simple games
that require savvy to complete.) March 18 - "Diabetes and Arthritis Basics"
by Bryan Deneberg, National Diabetic Education Association (After discussing
diabetic basics, there will be a demonstration on proper foot care and
additional information given regarding proper eye care.  Other topics to be
discussed are:  arthritis pain management, benefits to orthotic bracing and
NO COST Medicare programs.  Everyone attending the program will receive a
FREE pair of diabetic socks so pre-registration for this program is a must.)
March 24 - Craft: Making Spring Greeting Cards, 10:30 am (Join us as Donna
Hollman and Jan Wisse show us how to make special Spring themed greeting
cards that will be delivered to the center's Meals on Wheels clients in a
gift bag.) March 25 - Quinoa Cooking and Tasting with Roberta (This hands-on
cooking preparation opportunity will allow attendees to make a simple
pudding-like quinoa recipe.  According to the Incas, quinoa is known as
chisaya mama or "mother of all grains."  It is an ancient seed that is
harvested from the goosefoots plant is native to South America.) March 27 -
"Journey Dancing" - Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Esta Kaftan, LCSW,
Certified Leader, 12:45 pm (Weaving simple, guided movement sequences with
free exploration, Journey Dancing reconnects you with your innate state of
joyous wellbeing.)  Lunch begins at 11:45 am and the program begins at 12:45
pm.  This is the first of four 'Boom-errific" (Baby Boomer + Terrific)
