Freeholder Robert Zaborowski, human services liaison, announced that county senior centers, operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, have released their latest program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

October 8 – “Know the Facts About Shingles” by Rite Aid Pharmacy, 10:30 a.m. (Presented by a Pharmacist and a Clinical Manager from Rite Aid Pharmacy.  Topics to be covered will be risks, symptoms and treatments from the shingle virus).

October 8Free Osteoporosis Sahara Screenings with Saint Barnabas Medical Center, 10:30-12:00 p.m. (Saint Barnabas Medical Center has partnered with Rite Aid Pharmacy to offer simple osteoporosis “Sahara” screenings.  It is done by resting your foot comfortably in a device for a painless, non-invasive ultrasound measurement.  An analysis is given with the results and recommendations.  The entire screening takes only a few minutes and no appointment is necessary).

October 10 – Total Brain Workout, 10:30 a.m. (Dust off those thinking caps and bring them along today.  Workout includes timed puzzles and mind game.  Please make a reservation).

October 15 – Fall Flower Arranging Workshop, 10:30 a.m. (Members of the Bernardsville Garden Club will conduct an informative and interactive flower arranging workshop.  All participants take home a lovely live flower basket.  Seating is limited and reservations are required).

October 17 – “All About Apples” by Joe Gyrurian, Horticultural Consultant, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 10:30 a.m. (Joe will discuss the various types of apples as well as explain modern production methods.  A variety of apples will be sampled).

October 21Free Vision Screenings with Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:00-12:00 p.m. (No appointment necessary).

October 22 – “Recycling: What Goes In and What Stays Out” by Melissa Harvey, Somerset County Solid Waste Department, 10:30 a.m. (Are you unsure how to tell what you can and can’t recycle?  This program will clear up those questions.  Receive a Free Newspaper Recycling Bucket and a Free reusable grocery bag).

October 23 – “Conquer Clutter” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity by Linda Anders, Professional Organizer, 12:00-2:00 p.m. (Linda Anders owns an organizing business and is a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers.  She specializes in personalized home organizing, space planning, records management and behavior modification.  During this presentation, Linda will touch on all of the above topics and will also cover how to eliminate paper piles in order to acquire more space in your home.  This program addresses anyone who has wasted time looking for important documents such as bank statements, income tax information and receipts and also offers information on when it is safe to dispose of these items.  $25.00 per person.  Registration is required by October 21st.  Boxed Lunches are available.  For those 60 and above there is a donation of $2.00 and for those under 60 the cost is $6.75).

October 24 – Rubber Stamping Greeting Cards Workshop with Gerry, 10:30 a.m. (Gerry will show you how to create your own unique Thanksgiving cards for friends and loved ones).

October 28 – “Supportive Services for Veterans and their Families” by Volunteers of American, 10:30 a.m. (Volunteers of America have organized this division to offer services to support our veterans and their families while they are away as well as when they transition back home).

October 28 – “AARP Defensive Driving Course” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity, 9:00-3:00 p.m. (Any licensed driver may take this course to sharpen driving skills plus receive 5% discount on insurance premiums for 3 years.  AARP members $15 and Non AARP members $20.  Lunch is available for a donation of $2 for those 60 and above and a cost of $6.75 for those under age 60.  Please make your reservation no later than Friday, October 24th.  Class is limited to 25 people).

Ocotber 29 – “New Ragtime Guitar: A Musical & Historical View of America’s Frist Popular Music Fad” by Allen Jaffe, Artist/Composer, 10:45 a.m. (Allan Jaffe will explore the musical and social origins of piano ragtime, focusing on the music of Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb and James Scott, among others.  He will introduce the audience to the music of three great ragtime artists, Arthur “Blind” Blake, Mississippi John Hurt and the Reverend Gary Davis, showing how these artists incorporated techniques from piano ragtime into their particular form of acoustic blues.  The third part of the presentation deals with his own rags, which effectively fuse the two styles of ragtime together, while incorporating elements of more contemporary forms of American music, i.e. Jazz, Funk and Blues.  The result is a new form of acoustic solo guitar music).

October 30 – Sculpey Time: Learn How to Make Objects with Clay, 10:00 a.m. (Try your hand at making clay objects with Sculpey which is soft and pliable, works and feels like ceramic clay but will not dry out when exposed to the air.  It is the perfect material to create many different types of items).

October 3 – “The Life & Work of Alexander Calder” – Lecture & Wire Sculpture Workshop, Art of the Master’s Program by Creative Notions, 10:30 a.m. (Alexander Calder was an American sculptor known as the originator of the mobile, a type of sculpture made with delicately balanced or suspended components which move in response to motor power or air currents.  Calder’s stationary sculptures are called stabiles.  He also produced numerous wire figures, notably for a miniature circus.  The day’s project will be a wire sculpture.  Fifteen minute lecture has unlimited attendance.  Art project has a 16 person maximum.  Advanced registration for the art project is required).

October 15 – “Unused Medication Drop-Off Opportunity” with Officer Thomas Wallace, Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, 9:30-10:30 a.m. (Officer Wallace will be at the center to collect any unused or expired medications.  Please take advantage of this safe way to dispose of your medications.  Center staff cannot accept any dropped off medications without the Somerset County Sheriff’s Officer being present).

October 16 – Celebrating Latino Heritage, 10:30 a.m. (Join us as Eulalia Kuga teaches us how to dance the Cumbia.  After dancing we will make a Hispaniola Decorative Plate.  Have you ever tasted Adobo Roast Loin of Pork or Argentine Lentil Stew?  If not, join us for a special lunch.  Reservations are required by Friday, October 10th).

October 20 – “Stroke and Heart Attacks” by the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, 10:30 a.m. (A representative from the visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills will be at the center to discuss the differences between strokes and heart attacks.  The causes for both are similar, yet diverse.  Both share many of the same risk factors, but there are also differences.  Learn the difference in these two medical conditions).

October 21 – Book Club’s First Meeting, 1:30-3:00 p.m. (Olive Kitteridge (2008) presents a portrait of the title character and a number of recurring characters in the coastal town of Crosby, Maine.  It takes the form of 13 short stories that are interrelated.  It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2009 and HBO is producing a four-part miniseries, based on the novel that will air in November.  This is the first book to be discussed.  For additional information or to pick up a copy of the book to read in preparation of the first meeting, contact Gwen or Lorraine, at (908) 753-9440).

October 27Free Balance Screenings with Caitlin Witucki, MS, Health Promotion Specialist, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. (Balance screenings will test upper and lower body strength, flexibility and endurance.  By assessing the skills used in everyday tasks, such as carrying groceries or climbing stairs, participants will better understand their risks for falling.  In addition, the screenings will offer key insights into the preventative measures as well as tips for improving balance).

October 29 – Diwali Celebration, 10:30 a.m. (Diwali is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals.  Harinee Madhusudhan, from Nadam of India, a non-profit organization promoting classical arts, will lead us in games and craft making.  An Indian classical dance by youth will be performed.  We will listen to Indian music and enjoy some mouthwatering Indian snacks and sweets).

October 31 – Halloween Brains and Games with Adrienne/Hand Bell Practice, 10:30 a.m.
