Somerset County Senior Centers Announce February Program Schedule

 

The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services have announced the February program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Please call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the appropriate centers.

February 4 – “A Year of Change: Review of 2013” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 am (Helen Vasko leads the discussion on the significant events of 2013 that have shaped our country’s future.)

February 7 – Craft: Creating Pinecone Birdfeeders, 10:30 am (Help out our local birds by constructing a pinecone birdfeeder to be hung outside the Senior Wellness Center for the duration of the winter.)

February 11 – “Preventing Back Injuries” by the Kessler Rehabilitation Center, 10:30 am (A Physical Therapist from Kessler Rehabilitation Center will speak about the best ways to avoid injuring your back while doing daily activities.)

February 12 – In-service Day – Center Closed

February 13 – “Affordable Health Care Act” – Lunch & Learn Opportunity with Kevin Lynch, President, Somerset County Chapter of the Society for Financial Awareness, 12:00-2:00 p.m. (Mr. Lynch will give an overview of the AHCA and explain the changes that many Americans can expect as a result.) Program fee is $10.00 with a boxed lunch option.  Suggested lunch donation for those 60 and above is $2.00, or $6.75 for those under age 60.  Reservations must be received by Tuesday, Feb. 11.

February 14 – Valentine’s Day Party & Bake Sale Fundraiser with Entertainment by Ken Tekel on the Guitar, 10:30 am (Wear red and join us today for live guitar music and a special lunch.  Afterwards, indulge in some treats and support the Senior Wellness Center by enjoying the bake sale fundraiser.  100% of the proceeds will be donated to the SWC’s activity fund for future programs and events.)

February 19 – “What are Personality Types?” by Michele TenEyck, 10:30 am (Michelle Van Eyck returns to discuss the different types of personalities and their traits.)

February 21 – Total Brain Workout: Literary Quiz, 10:30 am (This interactive brain exercise will test your knowledge about the literary “classics” throughout the years.)

February 25 – “Ask the Pharmacist/Brown Bag Event”  by Tina Mavinkurve, RPH & Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 am (Local Registered Pharmacist, Tina Mavinkurve and Registered Dietitian, Kaitlyn McGowan will be available to discuss any questions you have about medications and their interactions.  Please bring your prescription medications in a brown bag to the program.)

February 26 – “The World in a Day,” 10:30 am (Take a trip around the globe today!  Clients representing various countries will show you the best of their country including photos, information and healthy food samples.)

February 4 – “Controlling Bed Bugs” by Lynne Gregory, Coordinator, Pesticides Community Outreach, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, 10:30 am (The most important step in controlling bed bugs is to learn about them and prevent them from being introduced.  This program will highlight the prevention, detection and control of bed bugs, which are parasites that seek out sleeping people or animals.  Non-chemical and chemical intervention methods will also be discussed.)

February 11 & 25 – Tai Chi with Bobbi Joels, 10:30 am (Tai Chi as exercise is based on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically together into one long, graceful gesture.  Some studies have reported that participants experienced a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and a greater sense of well-being.  Regular tai chi can help reduce falls especially for those with balance problems.)

February 3 – Wordles with Warren Township E2 Students, 10:30 am (Students from Warren Township’s Enriched Education class will be at the center to create a “Wordle” for each attendee.  What is a “Wordle” you ask?  It is a “word cloud” that is created from text that will be provided by the answers to questions that the students ask.  Using different fonts, layouts, and color schemes, the one-word answers will be artfully arranged to create a personalized Wordle.  The students will return with the actual Wordles at another time.)

February 4 – “Enhancing Your Sense of Taste” by Nancy Rosa-Mejias, Program Coordinator, Family and Community Health Sciences, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 11:10 am (As people age, they may experience a decrease in the number of taste buds they have.  As a result, people may need greater taste stimulation to experience the four flavors of sweet, salty, sour and bitter.  This program will explain how the taste buds function and change over the years and will offer tasteful solutions to enhance the taste of food.)

February 6 – Black History Month Recognition, 11:10 am (Every February time is set aside to remember and honor African Americans who have done so much to shape our country and the world.  This year, The Father of Black History, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, is being recognized for bringing to light the contributions of Black Americans.  He was instrumental in and is recognized for putting Black history into textbooks.  His beliefs that we do not need a history of selected races or nations, but a history of the world void of national bias, race, hate and religious prejudice and for his extraordinary efforts towards that cause, has earned him the recognition as the Father of Black History.  Learn about Dr. Woodson and then join us as we discuss his accomplishments.)

February 10 – “Active Shooter Preparedness” with Officer Dan Gleason, Warren Township Police Department, 10:15 am (Officer Dan Gleason will join us for a very brief talk on what to do if we find ourselves in an active shooter situation.)

February 10 – “Classic Hollywood Romance: On Screen and Off” by Walter Choroszewski, 10:30 am (This program will take us to the roots of American Cinema from the Silent Screen through the Golden Age.  Walter will review some of the best Romantic Movies ever made with stories of the on-screen celebrity couples and their off-screen love lives.  He’ll showcase Hollywood’s longest marriages and contrast with some of the shortest and most unusual romances.)
